Thinkers & Doers: Skills for the 21st Century

At Indy STEAM Academy, we know the careers of tomorrow will require our students to be  adaptable, nimble and able to solve problems. They will need to be creative and think critically. They’ll need foundational content, such as literacy and math, and deep exploration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) concepts that will help them innovate beyond our wildest imaginations. We are growing tomorrow’s thinkers and doers with the 21st century skills needed to succeed.

What are 21st Century Skills?

21st century skills bridge all subject areas and give us the tools to face any challenge that may pop up in work or in life. These skills include:

  • Critical thinking
  • Creativity
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Information literacy
  • Media literacy
  • Technology literacy
  • Flexibility
  • Leadership
  • Initiative
  • Productivity
  • Social skills

A STEAM education naturally incorporates 21st century skills. Our days at Indy STEAM Academy are jam packed with authentic learning, hands-on explorations and challenging projects. We use every minute of the day and every resource available to develop critical thinkers and problem solvers

All K-6 students at Indy STEAM Academy enjoy 90 minutes a day of science and engineering instruction. Our students utilize the Engineering Design Process to investigate, plan, produce, and evaluate prototypes that solve real world problems and challenges. Students learn computer science skills, explore engineering by building things and creating objects, and participate in STEM competitions.

In the computer lab, students practice coding, animation and more. 1:1 computers and Smart Boards in the classrooms mean our students are hands-on learning in every grade from K-6. Our youngest scholars develop technology literacy through keyboarding and using a variety of tech. Older students work together to glean research, presentation and communication skills alongside engineering design challenges.

At Indy STEAM, the arts are an integral part of our teaching. Students grow their creativity through drawing, painting, ceramics, weaving, theater and dance. We also offer instruction in piano, guitar, xylophone and violin, as well as an after-school choir and band. All students are invited to attend our FREE after school clubs that provide time to practice essential social skills by spending time with peers in a safe space.

Throughout the year, we visit science museums and take industry tours, giving our students a first hand look at innovation and 21st century skills in practice. During fall, winter, and spring breaks we will take our K-5 students to visit college campuses and offer unique job shadowing and junior internships. Where else do K-5 students get the opportunity to step into the shoes of a STEAM career and experience what it’s really like to do this inspiring work?

Indy STEAM Academy promises to invest our time, expertise and energy into helping students go on to be the STEAM leaders of tomorrow. School may have started, but it’s never too late to enroll your K-6 student in our tuition-free school.
