Let’s Talk Fine Arts at Indy STEAM Academy: What We Offer and Why It Matters

Did you know that the A in STEAM stands for ART? You’ve probably heard about the national push to increase science, technology, engineering, and math education in our schools, but there is less talk about art education. We are Indy STEAM Academy because we believe in developing the whole child by nurturing both the academic and creative talents of students. We are the only elementary school in the Indianapolis area with an elective for fine arts.

Pressure on schools to increase reading and math test scores, as well as tightened budgets, have pushed art education out of students’ daily schedules. Instead of viewing art education as a side to more important academic learning, we believe that art education is the answer to increasing test scores and academic performance

Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, and verbal skill. Fine Arts learning can also improve motivation, engagement, creativity, communication, collaboration, and teamwork—all skills that the STEAM leaders of tomorrow will need!

When your child enrolls at Indy STEAM Academy, they will receive a diverse education in fine arts. Our program provides a broad introduction to all areas of the arts, with the ability to specialize and refine artistic skills as students grow at Indy STEAM Academy. We believe everyone needs a platform for self-expression and joy, and we help our students find theirs by providing opportunities to try new things while supporting their confidence.

Fine Arts Curriculum at Indy STEAM Academy

Our fine arts curriculum introduces students to a variety of styles, mediums, and techniques.

In the area of visual arts, students learn the fundamentals, such as color, line, and negative space, to create their own works of art. We provide instruction in drawing and painting, as well as ceramics and weaving

Music has a way of accessing our brain in powerful ways! Our Indy STEAM students learn to play instruments and read music. Options for instruments include piano, guitar, xylophone, and violin. We also host an after-school choir and band for students interested in taking their musical talent further.

The performing arts, such as theater and dance, are included in our STEAM curriculum. Children will have the opportunity to build confidence and speaking skills in drama class, as well as take dance classes with a focus on Alvin Ailey’s modern dance, tap, and ballet. No matter their ability, students will practice important skills like creative movement, balance, and coordination.

There is something for everyone in our Fine Arts Program at Indy STEAM Academy. Join us and unlock a door to imagination, creativity, and fun!
