3 Ways IndySTEAM Brings Scholars Back On Track
You may have read about Indiana’s “learning loss“, but we prefer to use “learning interruption” since we believe every student has the ability to learn. The facts remain, “…changes in achievement scores impact later life outcomes, including lifetime earnings, educational attainment,” and one’s ability to find adequate employment.
As a tuition-free public charter school for grades K-7, IndySTEAM Academy (IndySTEAM) helps scholars close achievement gaps, and get back on track academically. Our mission is to reduce generational poverty and illiteracy by nurturing academic and creative talents of underserved minority and underrepresented scholars, including girls. This is how we are addressing learning interruption for scholars in Indianapolis.
1- Longer School Days, Longer School Year
Longer school days significantly benefit scholars in Indianapolis, particularly in math and reading. Compared to traditional public schools, scholars at IndySTEAM engage in 370 more hours or 52 additional days of learning with seven hours of daily instruction during their 185-day school year. This approach, we believe, helps us close achievement gaps, better match school schedules with parent/guardian work schedules, and prepare scholars for higher education and high-earning careers. Plus, extended school hours lead to improved academic success and ensures students are prepared for high school and college.
2 – Hands-on & Experiential Learning
Our school provides hands-on learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) to prepare our scholars for high-demand, high-income careers. Encouraging our scholars to be thinkers and doers is essential for their success in any STEAM-related field, especially for kinesthetic learners. Our STEAM-based instructional model enables problem-solving, scientific inquiry, digital literacy, and creative expression through art and music. Trips to science museums, industry tours, and college campuses also enhance our scholars’ learning experiences, and offer mentoring, job shadowing, internships, and college tours to open our scholars’ eyes to the brilliant opportunities that await them.

3 – Social Emotional Learning
Our scholars deserve achievement, regardless of socioeconomic status. We teach our scholars six core values: respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, trustworthiness and good citizenship, right alongside the curiosity to explore and joy in the arts and sciences. We’re proud to provide scholars in grades K-7 the opportunity to learn in a safe, welcoming school that believes in their academic potential and supports them in finding pathways to STEAM-fueled futures.
