When children fall in love with reading, they explore worlds unknown, uncover mysteries, and empathize with characters. Reading is exciting and FUN! At Indy STEAM Academy, we believe that an early foundation of reading unlocks doors to the world and paves the path to academic success. 

All Indy STEAM students, from Kindergarten to 6th grade, receive a high quality reading education that encourages a love of reading for both pleasure and information. We help our students LOVE to read and be confident in their abilities!

Foundational Skills

The research on reading is clear: readers flourish with science-backed reading instruction from highly qualified teachers. We provide 90 minutes of daily reading instruction to create a solid literacy foundation for all students. Our teachers are all certified by the State of Indiana and participate in professional development that helps further their reading teaching skills.

Our guided reading program supports your child’s reading skills through small groups, with a teacher at the lead. Teachers use assessments to track student progress and provide students with personalized instruction on decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. We know the power of a good read-aloud and use quality literature to teach life lessons and also provoking critical thinking. 

If your child needs a little extra support to learn to read, our Success Time, a daily 60 minute block, is designed to catch kids who may need extra time on foundational skills. Students receive extra reading or math depending on individual needs. We also offer after school tutoring and homework help–just another way we ensure that failure is not an option. 

Reading at All Ages

6th grade reading instruction at Indy STEAM Academy is all about creating and encouraging independence. Middle schoolers love choice and feeling in control of their learning, so instruction at this age shifts to helping students find their own reading motivation.

Middle school students still need to learn reading fundamentals, but now we get to deep dive into the subject areas. In science, students explore the physical world by reading non-fiction text. Poetry is used to foster a love of words and ideas. And in social studies, biographies and historical fiction help students step back in time to understand what life was like in the past. We even include test-taking as a genre to help students conquer those tough questions!

Indy STEAM teachers use reading materials of varying difficulties and genres, while also including texts that represent the backgrounds, needs, and interests of our students. Choice in books, along with a caring teacher who can make great recommendations, helps middle school students find a book that is just right for them.
