Why STEAM Education is Critical For Young Learners
All aspiring student scientists, no matter where they live, regardless of their socio-economic status, deserve a chance for a bright future in STEAM-related careers. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. It’s in our school name.
Indy STEAM Academy (Indy STEAM) believes it’s our honorable responsibility to provide an experiential education that integrates all five of these disciplines to prepare students for today’s workforce. And believe it or not, IndySTEAM Academy (IndySTEAM) is a tuition free, public charter school for scholars grades K-7, right here in Indianapolis.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Need Arts
The US Department of Education places importance on STEM education for a strong future, stating:
“In an ever-changing, increasingly complex world, it’s more important than ever that our nation’s youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions.”
By incorporating the arts, STEAM education helps students develop critical thinking, communication, creative problem-solving, innovation, and analytical skills. IndySTEAM scholars experience daily art, music, dance and violin classes, along with their STEM subjects. This experiential and interdisciplinary approach sparks innovative and creative talents among our scholars, and engages both sides of the brain which will help our scholars succeed both academically and socially to be successful in future careers.
Building Bright Futures Today
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM-related jobs are projected to grow by 10% from 2021 to 2031, (double the rate of non-STEM-related careers) and earn an average annual income double that of other careers. As exciting as those projections look, BIPOC and women are still underrepresented. There is a lot of work to do, starting with our youth at school. We believe it’s imperative that we as educators rise up to the challenge to close the achievement gaps, teach hope, and inspire future generations… while having fun.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in STEAM
At IndySTEAM, our mission is to reduce generational poverty and illiteracy by preparing all scholars for high-wage, high-demand, 21st-century STEAM-based careers. We proudly serve a diverse population, including underserved and underrepresented scholars, like girls, in our small state-of-the-art school.
STEAM education, taught by representational, inspirational, motivated teachers, is critical to prepare today’s learners for the bright futures they deserve. By incorporating the arts into STEM education, Indy STEAM provides a well-rounded, hands-on approach to learning that empowers a wide range of scholars and develops modern day skills necessary for tomorrow’s opportunities.
