Staff Spotlight: Camryn Allen

With Indy STEAM’s second school year already underway, we’d like to introduce you to the new faces you’ll see around school. First up, our music teacher, Camryn Allen. Ms. Allen hails from Greenwood, Indiana and brings with her a passion for music of all types. Welcome Ms. Allen and thank you for sharing your talents with our students!
When did you know you wanted to be an educator?
I knew that I wanted to be an educator when I began working at my first job when I was 16 at a before and after school program. I found my passion for music early on in my childhood and decided my second year of college that I wanted to combine that with my love for teaching and working with children.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher was Eric Howe from high school. He was a very reasonable, likable and respectable teacher. He understood the importance of building rapport with students and making them feel understood as high school is a difficult time anyway. He also made sure that his expectations were clear and that we achieved what was intended in his classroom.
How does Indy STEAM Academy’s mission align with your personal values?
Indy STEAM Academy’s mission aligns with my personal values as it outlines the type of education that helps an individual become well-rounded. I believe that it is vital for students to be able to explore multiple areas in order to be prepared for future careers from the fine arts to mathematics and science. It also holds students to high expectations that will ensure that they will be successful and have a variety of opportunities in the future.
What do you love most about your role at Indy STEAM?
I love that I have the opportunity to begin my teaching career in such a wonderful school with amazing students, teachers, staff and administrators. It has been a wonderful first week getting to know the students in my class and in other duties that I have around the school. I very much look forward to teaching and learning alongside my students this year!
What else would you like us to know about you?
I am from Greenwood, Indiana. I have a large family. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, crocheting, reading and participating in jam sessions around Indy. I started playing the ukulele when I was 16 and I hope to be able to implement and instruct students on this instrument this year.
