Building Character and Greater Expectations at Indy STEAM
At IndySTEAM Academy (IndySTEAM), we believe that character-building and high expectations are essential for our scholars’ success at our tuition-free, public school for grades K-7. Our focus on character-building reduces behavioral issues, prepares scholars for high-earning high-demand careers in STEM, and uplifts the underserved youth to confidently strive for the brilliant futures they deserve.
It’s our responsibility as educators to model and instill exemplary character schoolwide, and uphold high expectations for our scholars so they become self-directed life-long learners.
Our character building programs help students become motivated and committed learners capable of self-direction and pursuing wisdom. They develop a positive growth mindset to be critical thinkers and creative problem-solvers who understand and apply knowledge, demonstrate intellectual integrity, and solve challenging real-world problems. These skills then translate from academic contexts to career fields.

The Six Pillars of Character are fundamental to creating the IndySTEAM school culture and positive learning environment:
Trustworthiness
Being honest, reliable, and doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Trustworthiness means keeping promises and not lying, cheating, or stealing.
Respect
Taking care of others as you would like to be treated. Respecting others and listening to their opinions and feelings means being polite and using good manners.
Responsibility
Doing the things you are supposed to do and being accountable for your actions. Taking responsibility means looking after your own affairs and helping others when they need it.
Fairness
Treating everyone equally and giving them a fair chance. Fairness means not favoring one person over another and following the rules.
Caring
Being kind and compassionate towards others. Caring means showing empathy and helping those in need.
Citizenship
Respecting and valuing diversity, promoting equality, and being responsible for the effects of our actions on the community and the environment are all part of citizenship.

BIPOC and women are underrepresented in STEM careers. At IndySTEAM, we aim to change that by providing a high-quality educational option for scholars. Our scholars take advanced coursework and graduate with credits towards an Associate’s Degree, Core 40 with STEM Honors, or a Technical High School Diploma. We make sure that underserved minority and underrepresented scholars like girls learn that it is possible to achieve careers in high-demand, high-wage STEM fields.

By utilizing the Six Pillars of Character, we can reduce behavioral issues, create a positive learning environment, and empower scholars to take a path towards economic freedom and personal growth. When our vision turns to reality, we create life-long learners who become productive citizens in their communities and increase their economic earning power.
