The secret is out: Indy STEAM Academy’s kindergarten is a great place to be. We’re delighted to have expanded to two full kindergarten classrooms and welcome two wonderful teachers. This week, we’d like to introduce you to Kamara Gard. Ms. Gard will be leading our youngest STEAMgineers and has a passion for teaching and helping children grow. Welcome Ms. Gard!

When did you know you wanted to be an educator?

I wanted to be an educator right after I graduated from high school. I was babysitting my nephews and knew that I wanted to work with children from that moment on. I enrolled in Ball State University’s elementary education program and graduated five years later.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

They were all my favorites. Who can pick just one? I always loved school and all of my teachers.

How does Indy STEAM Academy’s mission align with your personal values?

I was raised with a sense of purpose and the value of a great education. I also am an educator that believes in teaching with higher order thinking strategies. I love integrating the content areas into everything that I teach. The longer school day and school year gives me the time to teach everything that I couldn’t teach before. 

What do you love most about your role at Indy STEAM?

I love working with the kindergarteners. They make so much growth and love learning as much as I love teaching.

What else would you like us to know about you? 

Teaching is my passion. I enjoy working at Indy STEAM Academy and I am glad to have met everyone here. When I am not here, I enjoy spending time with my mother. We go out to eat and shop together. We love hanging out around the house baking our favorite cookies and watching our favorite television shows.
