Indy STEAM Academy is the first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) focused K-5 school in the area. Why?

“There are several STEM focused schools in the Indianapolis area, but none have an integrated focus that includes the Arts.  This may be due to the great push for accountability in Reading, Math, and Science to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the State Report Card. As a result, I believe the Arts has taken a back seat to other content areas.

Indy STEAM Academy recognizes the need to develop the whole child by nurturing the academic and creative talents of students, so we included the Arts as one of our focus areas.  We know that the Arts develops the right side of the brain and fosters creativity, innovation, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills.  These are skills that are needed to be successful in STEM careers.“

What are your goals for Indy STEAM K-5 tuition-free public charter school?

“Our goal is to provide high-quality educational opportunities for our students and hold ourselves accountable for building a strong foundation in literacy. We’ll ensure the academic success of all students by building one hour into our school day where we focus on specific skill areas for intervention, reinforcement or enrichment to ensure that each student is functioning on grade level.  Our students can all be proficient in reading, math, and science.

Another goal is to deliver validating, meaningful social-emotional curriculum.  By using the ABC (Academic, Behavior, and Career) plan, developed with parents, students, and teachers, we support each student as an individual.  We ensure their academic success and we enable their emotional success by focusing on key tools to developing a positive mindset.  Learning and a sense of self-esteem can flourish, if students feel good about themselves and know that we value their cultural differences and learning styles.

Yet another important goal at Indy STEAM is to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment. Our school is a place where students and teachers feel appreciated and valued for who they are and what they do each day. Our project-based learning curriculum fosters excitement about learning by doing and creating solutions to real world problems  We celebrate our teachers and their excitement in facilitating learning and helping students become critical thinkers, communicators, collaborators, innovators and problem-solvers.”
