The Symbiotic Relationship in Math & Music

Have you ever noticed the beauty of mathematics in music? Music and math go together like peanut butter and jelly. This is not new information.

Famous mathematician, Pythagoras, once said, “There is geometry in the humming of the strings. There is music in the spacing of the spheres.”  Legendary saxophonist John Coltrane used the mathematical theory, Circle of Fifths, to explain his concept of music.

Mathematics and music both require an understanding of patterns, ordering, symmetry, numbers, ratios, fractions, divisions, and parts-whole concepts. Recent studies show that young scholars improve in both subjects when they learn mathematics and music together, especially when the scholars play musical instruments, because they work together to teach similar concepts.

It’s the academic study of video game music.
